About Evenley
Evenley lies at the southern tip of Northamptonshire, bordering both Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, with documentary evidence of the village stretching back to medieval times. Its church was originally built between the 11th and 13th centuries, in a style shared with the nearby churches at Croughton and Farthinghoe.
By the early 19th century the medieval church had fallen into disrepair, and a fire in 1865 destroyed most of its interior woodwork, though the rood screen was saved and later reinstalled. The present church of St George, a cruciform building in the Early English style with a broach spire and a peal of five bells, was rebuilt in 1864–65 by the Gothic Revival architect Henry Woodyer. At the heart of the village is the Village Green, bought by the parish council in 1961 and formally registered in 1968.
Neighbouring areas include Brackley, Turweston and Farthinghoe.
