The RTS Meter Switch Off – What You Need to Know
By 30 June 2025, RTS Meters Will No Longer Work – Here’s What That Means
Are you ready for the RTS meter switch off?
The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), a system that allows some older electricity meters to switch between peak and off-peak rates, will be permanently switched off by 30 June 2025. This change affects over 900,000 homes in Great Britain, many of which rely on RTS for electric heating and hot water.
If your property has an RTS meter, it’s crucial to act now to avoid disruptions to heating and hot water for your home.
What is the RTS Meter and Who is Affected?
RTS meters were introduced in the 1980s to allow energy suppliers to offer cheaper off-peak tariffs. These meters are commonly found in:
Properties using storage heaters or electric heating systems
Homes with Economy 7, Economy 10, or Total Heat Total Control tariffs
Properties without a gas supply, such as rural homes and high-rise flats
If your property matches any of these, you should check if you have an RTS meter.

What Happens If RTS Meters Aren’t Replaced?
⚠️ Heating and hot water may stop working correctly – without a replacement, meters may stop switching at the right times, leaving you with no heating or water.
⚠️ Higher energy bills – without a functioning meter, energy usage may not be tracked correctly, leading to unexpected costs.
⚠️ Disruption for tenants – unresolved RTS meter issues could cause complaints or tenancy dissatisfaction if you are managing rental properties.
How to Check if Your Property has an RTS Meter
Look for a separate switch box near the electricity meter labeled Radio Teleswitch
If the property has electric heating but no gas supply, it is more likely to have an RTS meter
Contact the electricity supplier to confirm whether an RTS meter is installed
By acting now, you can avoid the RTS meter switch off and any potential disruptions and ensuring you continue receiving reliable heating and hot water.
Don’t wait until it’s too late! Contact your electricity supplier today to arrange a smart meter upgrade.
