About Greens Norton
Greens Norton takes its name from Sir Henry de Greene, who purchased the manor around 1355; before that the village was known as Norton Davy, or simply Norton. The manor was originally part of the royal estate until it was sold by Richard the Lionheart to Baldwin de Betun, Earl of the Isle of Wight, at the end of the 12th century.
At the heart of the village stands St Bartholomew’s Church, a Grade I listed building founded in the 7th century, with parts dating to the 10th and 11th centuries and a spire visible across the surrounding fields. Inside are the alabaster effigies of Sir Thomas Greene, who died in 1457, and a brass memorial to a second Sir Thomas Greene, who died in 1462, and his wife Maud.
The parish includes the hamlet of Duncote, and neighbouring areas include Towcester, Blakesley, Bradden, Pattishall and Cold Higham.
