DEA Equipment – What You Really Need and What’s Nice to Have
If you’re considering becoming a Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA), one of the first things you’ll need to think about is equipment. Having the right kit makes your work smoother, helps you stay compliant with RdSAP standards, and shows professionalism to your clients.
The good news is you don’t need to spend thousands to get started. In this article, I’ll share my thoughts on the essential equipment for DEAs. Once you are more established you can look to improve your tool kit.
Essential Equipment for DEAs
To carry out EPC assessments professionally, you’ll need:
-
Laser measure – a reliable laser measurer is vital for accurate room dimensions.
- Carpenters Ruler – ideal for wall thickness and loft insulation measurements.
-
Tape measure – if you prefer a retractable tape measure we recommend a Stanley FatMax. .
-
Digital camera or smartphone/tablet – you’ll need clear photos of the property and features like heating systems. We use the iPad pro
-
Personal protective equipment (PPE) – gloves, dust mask, and over shoes for site visits.
-
Torch – for loft spaces and darker areas.
-
Clipboard – to record notes and keep paperwork organised.
- Graph Paper – Helps keep your floor plans neat and tidy.
- Multi Coloured Pens – for annotating and drawing floor plans.
-
Ladder – required to safely access loft spaces where possible. Always ensure it’s stable, secure, and used within your competence.
- Meter Box Key – essential for recording the meter types.
These are the non-negotiables. With this basic kit, you’ll be able to complete EPCs to the required standard. You can red more about the equiopment we use here.
